Outside 080301/sa

Okay, Jim, this one's for you. Just to get the rest of you up to speed, Jim requested that I take a few pictures outside the apartment. Sorry, there's just so much to share...so little time! Hengelo Outside

Hengelo is beautiful...as far as cities go. Even though it is supposed to have more than 80,000 people, it feels like a quaint little town. Its a lot like when I lived in the metroplex, I rarely left Carrollton.

Hengelo has been inhabit for thousands of years according to archeologists, but wasn't founded as a municipality until 1802. During WWII the city was often bombed by Allied because of the presence of the railways and the war industry activities of local factories. Accidentally the heart of the town was bombed out, during the Bombing of Hengelo on October 6-7, 1944, killing several hundred people. This has also left the city without much of an historical centre.

Our apartment is just a couple of block off of the center of town. (Okay, Little Brother, look how smart your big sis is getting!!! I'm going to strut my stuff and knock your socks off...LOL) Below is Google Earth map. The northern most point on the map is our apartment. Following the blue line, you can see where I walk daily to the grocery (the 2nd point).

The third point is the Bastille. The Roman Bastille is one of the most prominent buildings in town and was built in 1890 and is devoted to H. Lambertus. That means nothing to me, but maybe my scholarly brother will recognize the name.

Continuing along the blue line you come to the town square. This is where the street vendors come each Wednesday and Saturday to set up their stands and sale their wares. It is a lot like Farmers' Market in Dallas, except they sell a bit of everything. The last point marks the train depot. It looks far on this map, but we walk all the way to the train station several times a week and it doesn't seem far at all.

Take a picture walk with me from the apartment to the train depot! Hurry, you'll need to keep up...
